Softball Ties Non-Conference Doubeheader Against Monmouth

March 27, 2007

Final Stats

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ - The Explorers lost one and won the other in a pair of games against Monmouth University today.  They managed six hits in the first game, but couldn't recover from a six-run Monmouth inning in the bottom of the second to go up 6-1.

Alicia De La Rosa singled with the bases loaded in the second inning to bring in La Salle's first run as Michelle Sullivan passed homeplate, but that would be the only run by the Explorers before Vinnie Caputo struck out to end the inning.

Jen Street threw to home from first to save a run and get the Explorers their second out of their half of the second inning, but that and the single first inning score would not be enough to fend off a determined Monmouth attack at the plate, when the Hawks walked and singled their way to six runs before the Explorers could close the frame. A double from Street earned her La Salle's second run before the Hawks finally took the first game, 9-2.

It would prove to be a different story in the second game.  The Explorers managed to turn things around when Michelle Sullivan singled in the fifth at bat and brought in Mary Pat Conville for the first score.  Monmouth answered back again, this time with only one tying run off of a single from senior Heather Gordon.

After a scoreless second inning, Kate Gulkis finally opened the game up when she doubled a straight shot down the third base line and brought in three RBIs after two singles and a walk loaded the bases.  Monmouth creeped up behind in the same inning, earning themselves two more runs from an error and RBI single, but La Salle held on to their 4-3 lead until the six inning, at which point the Explorers earned another three runs when Laura Dezolt singled and Sullivan doubled for a total of three RBIs. The Hawks fought back with a run a piece in the remaining innings, but the Explorers had done their damage and walked away victorious with a 7-5 win to split the doubleheader.

Next up the girls will be back on Olney Avenue after eight straight games on the road.  They will be hosting Temple for a two-day series; 3:00PM on Friday and 12:00PM on Saturday.
