PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University Crew opened up its season competed in their first race of the fall season at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River, Saturday. Windy conditions flanked the race course of the 4000-meter head race. The crew entered in seven categories: men and women College Eight, men and women JV Eight, women Freshman/Novice Eight and men and women College Four.
Highlighting the day was the women's Freshman/Novice Eight consisting of Christina Smith, Gillian Powell, Meg Brown, Kirsten Schiller, Karen Mahoney, Allison Pretak, Katie Teevan, Jackie Smolarik and Sadie Mazur. They rowed to a great fourth-place finish, crossing the line in a time of 18:20, while Penn won the race in 16:09.
The women's College Four consisting of Colleen Green, Liz McGrain, Aimee Nichols, Shauna Goetz and Kristen Weimar came in 14 out of 17 boats with a time of 19:17. Dowling won the race with a time of 17:06.
The men's College Four consisting of Francesca Cupo, Zach Coons, Joe Scibetta, Joe Hughes and Max Orenstein finished with a time of 17:48, placing 17 out of 19 boats. First place went to United States Naval Academy with a time of 15:12.
The men's JV Eight consisting of Nicole Caronia, Blaine Kneeshaw, Tim Brosious, Adam Sutkus, Rob Thomas, Tom McGoldrick, Mark Ricciardi, Paul LaPolla and Justin Wiener crossed the finish line with a time of 15:28 which placed them sixth out of seven boats. Temple took first with a time of 14:16.
The women's JV Eight consisting of Frankie Lamont, Sarah Brown, Patrice Girard, Molly Gatch, Becky Mahney, Michelle DeLong, Rita Brown, Jenn Sammartino and Andrea Bacchus finished with a time of 18:08, which put them 11th out of 12 boats. Penn won this event as well in a time of 16:12.
The men's College Eight consisting of Francesca Cupo, Matt Stoltz, James Keough, Terrence McClain, Matt Wiedemer, Ryan Fair, Brett Fair, Zach Coons and Pete Berenotto were 17th, crossing the line in 14:57.10, while Navy won it in 13:08.20.
The women's College Eight consisting of Colleen Green, Liz McGrain, Aimee Nichols, Shauna Goetz, Kellie Nadeau, Dani Fralen, Kristen Weimar, Lauren Corkery and Jessie Lamont finished 11th in a time of 16:14.30, as Penn won the event in 14:54.90.
