Men's JV 4 Wins Bronze at Knecht Cup

La Salle University Men's and Women's Rowing traveled to Cooper River in Collingswood, New Jersey this weekend to reace in the Knecht Cup. Due to the inclement weather that came in Sunday, what was supposed to be two days of racing, was squeezed into one on Saturday.

 

The Explorers entered four races: Men's and Women's Varsity Eight, Women's Junior Varsity Eight and Men's Junior Varsity Four.

 

The first race for La Salle was the Women's Varsity Eight, containing Nicole Caronia, Aimee Nichols, Michelle Kukawski, Becky Mahney, Shauna Goetz, Kristin Weimar, Dani Fralen, Michelle DeLong and Sadie Mazur. They crew finished its heat in a time of 7:30.4, placing them fifth out of six boats - ahead of Duquesne. Winning that race was the University of North Carolina with a time of 6:54, but Gonzaga won the grand final in a time of 6:48.3.

 

The Explorers next crew out was the Men's Varsity Eight, consisting of  Francesca Cupo, Justin Wiener, Zack Coons, Ryan Fair, Matt Wiedemer, Matthew Stoltz, James Keough, Adam Sutkus and Joe Hughes. They finished their heat in 6:22, while Temple took the race in 5:59, then went on to witn the grand final in 5:55.1.

 

The Women's Junior Varsity Eight raced next for La Salle, a crew containing Patrice Girard, Sarah Brown, Molly Gatch, Jacquelyn Smolarek, Karen Mahoney, Meg Brown, Gillian Powell, Katie Teevan and Desiree Cappuccio. They finished their heat with a time of 8:03.3, while first-place went to Dayton (7:11.8). The University of Rhode Island won the grand final in a time of 7:00.4.

 

The last race of the day for the Explorers was the Men's Junior Varsity Four consisting of Lauren Corkery, Brett Fair, Max Orenstein, Joe Scibetta and Bryan Schwartz. The crew stopped the clock in 8:06.4, placing third and taking the bronze medal ahead of Vassar, while Colgate won the event crossing the line in 7:12.9.

 

Next up for La Salle Rowing will be the Atlantic 10 Championships on the Cooper River for the Women, Saturday, April 21, while the Men will be racing on the Schuylkill River in the Kerr Cup.
