PHILADELPHIA - Outfielder John Malloy of La Salle and Richmond lefthander Matt Zielinski have been named to the 2007 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, it was announced by Collegiate Baseball.
A member of the 2007 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, Malloy led the Explorers in at-bats (211), hits (69), doubles (18) and three-hit games (six) and was second in runs (28) and total bases (93). The Fairless Hills, PA, native set a school and Conference-freshman record with a 24-game hitting streak to open the season, the second-longest in league annals. Malloy finished the year with a .327 batting average and .441 slugging percentage.
Zielinski, the 2007 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, led the Spiders with a 3.30 earned run average and finished second on the staff in wins (six) and strikeouts (70). The southpaw made 14 starts and tossed 90 innings and notched a complete game on May 5 in Richmond's 3-1 win over Massachusetts. The Southampton, PA, resident registered a career-high 10 strikeouts on Mar. 30 as Richmond downed GW, 13-2. He is the first UR student-athlete to be named the A-10 Rookie of the Year in baseball.
