WEST CHESTER, PA - The La Salle Men's tennis team completed a 9-0 shutout of West Chester on Sunday afternoon. For the third match in a row, the Explorers dominated early, sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets. Freshman sensation George Gennaoui rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 position while Matt Rivera took down West Chester's Pete Braun 6-2, 6-2 at the second position. At No. 3, senior captain Eric Glick was pushed in the second set before prevailing 6-1, 6-4. Andy Petrusky and Chris Butera dominated at the fourth and fifth positions, only dropping one game between them. At No. 6 Chris Stonis made his La Salle debut, winning easily in thirty-five minutes 6-0, 6-1 over Ronald Shalbon.
In doubles, the Golden Rams came out charging in all three matches, but it wasn't enough to get past the Explorers. At No. 1 doubles, Jonathan Maula and Gennaoui won a tightly contested match, 8-6. Ryan Knarr and Christian Harvey prevailed 8-6 at No. 2 doubles, in a match that was nip and tuck the entire way. The Explorer duo broke a 6-6 tie, then held serve to finish out the afternoon victorious. At the third position, it was Chris Butera and Eric Glick rounding out the Explorers sweep, winning 8-4 to clinch the shutout.
"These first three matches have been a great opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate the depth we have on this team," said head Coach Ed Colfer. "Being able to see everyone out there competing has given us the chance to see what everyone's strengths and weaknesses are and what we need to work on individually and as a team. I'm proud of the entire team's work ethic these last three matches. Next week we'll have our true starting lineup out there as we get into the bulk of our schedule."
