Kara Harpel and Maria Allegretto each scored a goal as the Explorers defeated visiting Lafayette, 2-1, on Sunday.
Ellen Axelsen recorded three saves to earn the win for La Salle, who improves to 5-4 on the year.
Harpel got the Explorers on the board with just over two minutes to play in the first half. Colleen Lechner's penalty corner was deflected off of Lafayette goalkeeper Courtney Dixon, right to Harpel who was positioned in front of the cage. She rocketed a shot past Dixon to give La Salle a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
Christy Miller and the La Salle offense were presented with a golden opportunity to pad their lead with just under five minutes to play.
Miller dribbled the ball into the circle and was able to get Dixon out of position, leaving the Lafayette goal wide open. Miller appeared to score, but a whistle was blown prior to her shot, negating the play.
Fortunately for the Explorers, a penalty was called on Lafayette, setting up a penalty shot. Allegretto took advantage of the free shot, beating Lafayette's Kelsey Andersen, who had come in for Dixon, and giving La Salle a 2-0 lead.
Lafayette made a comeback attempt, as Maggie Condon scored an unassisted goal with 1:44 left, cutting the La Salle lead in half.
The Leopards threatened to even the score in the game's final moments, but the Explorer defense tightened up and secured the victory.
La Salle will travel to Lehigh this Friday for a non-conference game against the Mountain Hawks at 3:00 p.m.
