Final Stats
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Junior quarterback Chris Hanson (Southampton, PA/Archbishop Wood) completed two touchdown passes to give the La Salle (0-3) a 12-10 lead but a pair of missed extra-points set up a game-winning field goal with :42 seconds remaining to give College of New Jersey (2-1) a 13-12 win on Friday night at McCarthy Stadium.
Despite turning the ball over four times on three fumbles and an interception and being penalized seven times for 83 yards the Lions' third straight win over the Explorers.
The Lions led early after Matt Dallesio hit a 43-yard field goal with 20 seconds left in the first quarter and quarterback Chris James connected with Lee Jones for a 39-yard touchdown strike late in the second quarter to give TCNJ the 10-0 edge.
The Explorers, who made one earlier trip inside the five with a full set of downs but saw Anthony Perlozzo's (Ocean City, MD/Decatur) 23-yard field goal fly wide, answered with a minute and eight seconds remaining in the half when Hanson nailed Gabe Guerreri (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) on a 32-yard pass to cap a three play-drive. However, the Lions were able to block Perlozzo's extra point to keep the lead at 10-6.
The Explorers found the end zone again with a minute and 34 seconds left in the third quarter when senior tight end John McVey (Langhorne, PA/Notre Dame) was wide open in the end zone for a five yard reception to give the Explorers their first lead of the season. Once again, the extra point attempt failed - this time with Perlozzo's kick hitting the left upright.
The Explorers then went -13 yards on their next two drives in the first quarter to give TCNJ a drive that started on their own 30 and ended with Dallessio connecting from 28 yards out. He had come up just short on a 50-yarder in between makes. With only 42 seconds and no time-outs the Explorers ran out of time and remain winless on the year.
The Explorers head to Beaver Falls, PA to challenge Geneva College next Saturday with a 4:00 PM kick-off scheduled at Reeves Stadium.
