Members of the 1985 La Salle Baseball team were back on campus on Saturday afternoon, being honored at halftime of the men's basketball game vs. St. Louis. The 1985 squad is commonly referred to as the finest in school history, winning a record 31 games and ending the season one victory shy of the College World Series.
After finishing second in the MAAC to Iona, the Explorers received at at-large bid to play for the ECAC's automatic NCAA tournament bid. The Explorers traveled to Orono, Maine and defeated the perennial powerhouse University of Maine and Long Island University to advance to the NCAA East Regional.
The Explorers opened the tournament in Columbia, South Carolina with a loss to host University of South Carolina. After defeating Western Carolina and Rider, the Explorers fell once again to USC in the NCAA East Regional Finals.
The team had its share of great players, including La Salle Alumni Association Hall of Athletes inductees Sam Boone and Barry Petrachenko.
