Philadelphia, PA – The success of the La Salle women’s basketball program does not end when a student-athlete completes her senior season. In fact, a numerous amount of former players have moved on to thriving careers in various fields while some have returned to the hardwood and have been honored for their accomplishments as coaches.
Cheryl Reeve, a 1988 La Salle graduate, is currently a member of a growing dynasty in the WNBA. Reeve just completed her third season as an assistant coach for the Detroit Shock, a franchise that has won three league championships dating back to 2003, while also wrapping up her first season as the Director of Player Personnel.
As an assistant coach, the former All-Big 5 selection primarily concentrates on player and guard development, perimeter play and defense. Reeve’s Director of Player Personnel duties consist of evaluating WNBA, college and international players alongside Shock head coach Bill Laimbeer.
In addition to Reeve’s notable success at the coaching level, Kelly Greenberg ‘89 has turned Boston University women’s basketball into one of the most competitive and talented programs in the nation. Greenberg helped lead the Terriers to a 20-win season in 2007-08 for the first time in 20 years and only the second time in school history. The two-time Second-Team All-Big 5 selection has reached the NCAA tournament seven times as a coach and is now only three wins away from moving into second all-time at Boston University.
Other alumni members who are currently in the coaching field include Shannon (McDade) Bretz ’01 (Cherokee High School, NJ), Chrissie (Donahue) Doogan ’97 (La Salle University), Maureen (Buckley) Ward ’90 (Merion Mercer Academy, PA) Trish (Giordano) Grant ’85 (Bishop McGuiness, NC), Kathy McCartney ’83 (Villa Marie Academy, PA), Liz (Crawford) Gibbs ’82 (Pitman High School, NJ), Debbie (Bodnar) Flooks ’77 (White Plains High School, NY) and Joanne (Pendergast) McVey ’76 (Neshaminy High School, PA).
