CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Korey Edwards continued to run strong as he led the Explorers with a 10th place finish and Nick Crits was tabbed Rookie of the Year for his 27th place run at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships held at Charlotte's Campus Course on Saturday morning. The men finished fifth in the team standings, while the women - led by freshman Stephanie Bearish - placed 11th.
Edwards - who ran to an 8th place finish out of 300 just two weeks ago at Penn State - completed Charlotte's 8K course in 24:26.2 for 10th place out of 138 runners. His Trevon Rainford was the second Explorer to cross the finish line, running to a 22nd place finish in 24:58.8. Crits and fellow rookie Tyler Jones were neck-in-neck, with Crits finishing 27th (25:04.9) and Jones 28th (25:07.4).
Crits was the first freshman in the conference to cross the finish line and took home Rookie of the Year honors for his effort this morning.
Charlotte's Adu Dentamo took home conference gold with a time of 24:01.9. Massachusetts won the team title with 75 points, just one point ahead of second-place Duquesne. Richmond placed third (111), Charlotte came in fourth (115) and the Explorers in fifth (122).
Freshman Stephanie Bearish led all Explorers in the women's 5K race with a 19:07.2 time for 37th place out of 139 runners. Senior Mary Clare Parrott crossed second for the Explorers in 63rd place (19:38.8). Freshman Samantha Gallagher rounds out the top three finishers with a 73rd place time of 19:49.2.
Charlotte again took the top individual time as Amanda Goeschius crossed in 17:37.7. Richmond took home the team title with 48 points. Charlotte (67) and Dayton (103) rounds out the top three team finishes.
