PHILADELPHIA - La Salle Women’s Basketball’s Jamie Walsh has been selected as the first 2008-09 Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week as announced today by the organization.

Walsh helped the Explorers to a pair of opening weekend wins, as she averaged 15.0 points per game, 5.5 assists, and shot 55.0% from the floor. She knocked down six three-point baskets in the two games, and her 11 assists for the week resulted in an additional 29 points for La Salle (four two-point baskets, seven threes).

The junior opened the season with 19 points, a career-high seven assists, and three rebounds in the Explorers 67-62 overtime victory at Villanova, then in La Salle’s home opener against Long Island, had 11 points and four assists.

In each game, she connected on three three-point baskets, something she had done just seven times all last season. Her numbers in 2007-08 included 50 made threes, tied for the 10th-best in a single season at the school, and 145 attempts, seventh all-time, which improved her three-point shooting percentage to a career 37.4% at the end of the year, seventh all-time.

The Downingtown, PA product currently has 86 career makes from behind the arc - 11 shy of the top 10 all-time - on 225 attempts - 30 shy - for a career 38.2% - still seventh all-time.

Last season, Walsh registered seven games with at least four assists, including a then career-high six twice to lead the team with 76. She also finished with a team-best 1.55 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Out of the gates, Walsh already has two games with at least four and her assist-to-turnover ratio for the season stands at 1.83.

La Salle returns to action Wednesday night, hosting Delaware at Tom Gola Arena with a 7 PM start time.
