Four former Explorer standouts were named to this year's Hall of Athletes class, announced by the Alumni Association and the athletic department. Pat Waninger '87, Amy Schneider '03, Rachel Ritz '98 and Marc Cianfrani '98 will be honored in a post-game ceremony following the men's basketball game versus Duquesne on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009.
Waninger is a baseball standout whose records still remain in the top five 20 years later. He was ranked first in eight statistical categories upon graduation and still ranks first in wins with 18.
Schneider attained many accolades during her soccer career, including such honors as Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, La Salle Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, NSCAA and Soccer Buzz All-Region teams and All-Atlantic 10. She still holds top four records in eight statistical categories.
Ritz and Cianfrani are among a line of Explorer track standouts in the past decade. Ritz holds two current records and had set six during her career. She is a USTFCCCA Academic All-American and earned several academic awards at the university and conference levels. She was a member of the Atlantic 10 outdoor 4x800 meter relay championship team along with current Hall of Athlete member Theresa Carroll.
Cianfrani was a member of six record-setting relay teams and set his own 800m record. He was named the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie in cross country along with being named Atlantic 10 outdoor Most Outstanding Performer the following year. He still owns three of the records he set or helped set.
An induction reception and ceremony honoring these four outstanding Explorers will be held in the Blue and Gold Dining Commons immediately following the men's basketball game on Feb. 22.
