PHILADELPHIA – La Salle University Women’s Basketball recently announced its two newest additions to the program for the 2009-10 season. Local product Danielle Callahan and Maryland native Ebonee Jones have signed their National Letters of Intent and will join the Explorers following their senior year of high school.
Now in her final year at Cardinal O’Hara, Callahan will remain in the city after her senior season. Last year, she helped lead her school to a 25-2 record while averaging six points per game. O’Hara, which was a top 20 school in numerous polls, went on to win the Catholic League playoff championship.
She currently has three cousins playing at the Division I level: senior Jess Pearson (Holy Cross), junior Kim Benton (Massachusetts) and freshman Megan Pearson (Villanova).
“Danielle is a consummate point guard,” said La Salle Head Coach Tom Lochner. “Her value to a team is not reflected in statistics alone. A true floor general, she distributes the basketball to teammates exceptionally well. A tremendous defender as well, Danielle ends up being instrumental to her team’s success on both ends of the floor.”
Jones will travel north next year to 20th and Olney after completing her career at Arundel High School located in Gambrills, MD. The McDonald’s All-American nominee helped lead Arundel to a county championship and to the Class 4A state championship game last year. During her sophomore campaign, Jones helped her team to a state championship.
Jones averaged nine points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and was tied for first on the team in three-point field-goal percentage (.509).
“Ebonee is a long, athletic guard with a wonderful upside,” said Lochner. “She does a little bit of everything out on the court. She can handle the basketball and has good court vision. She can shoot [the three-point shot], yet she can also create for herself off the dribble while finishing to the rim extremely well. Ebonee can also make an impact as an exceptional rebounder and defensive player.”
La Salle will lose just one player at season's end, as Margaret Elderton is the only senior on this year's roster.
