Early Runs the Difference in Explorer Loss

Feb. 24, 2008

Box Score

ELON, NC - The La Salle University Baseball team allowed seven early runs to Elon before its offense could get on the board and would drop the final game of the four-game series to the Phoenix, 10-5, Sunday at Latham Park.

A Shane Frangiosa single in the top of the fourth plated Brian Meagher for the Explorers first run of the game and a two-run fifth inning pulled La Salle to within 7-3.

John Rickards drove in John Malloy with a sacrifice fly and TJ Chism doubled with one out to bring home Justin Handler. However, he was stranded on the bag, just one of 10 runners left on base for the Explorers on the afternoon.

Elon (4-0) then answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and added another in the sixth to increase its lead to 9-3.

La Salle would get one more in the seventh - an RBI grounder by Mike Dertouzos scored Rickards - and Malloy hit his second home run of the spring in the eighth, to make it 9-5, but that was all the scoring the Explorers would get the rest of the way.

Brian Bodjiak (1-0) earned the win for the Phoenix, while Rickards, in his first pitching performance as a collegian, suffered the loss.

La Salle (0-4) returns home for its opener versus West Chester, Wednesday at 2:30 PM, before heading to the West Coast for five games next weekend.
