PHILADELPHIA, PA- The La Salle Explorers (7-9, 1-1 A-10) exploded for 13 hits as they shutout the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 14-0 in five innings in game one, and took a 8-0 victory in the second game of the afternoon. The Hawks dropped to 3-7 this season.
La Salle was led by a stellar offensive performance at the plate from freshman Ali Shepherd (Philadelphia, PA/ Creative & Performing Arts) who went 4-7 in the day including a three-run homer and four RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Laura Beth McCreesh (Philadelphia, PA/ St. Basil) stayed undefeated (4-0) with the game one win.
In the first game the Explorers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as senior Michelle Sullivan (Gibbstown, NJ/ Paulsboro) doubled in both runs.
The second inning was the difference-maker as Sullivan again doubled in two runs, followed by McCreesh's double to bring in two more. Shepherd came up big with a three-run homer to make it 13-0, her second round-tripper of the season.
The Hawks had no answer for McCreesh as the La Salle ace had seven strikeouts while allowing no hits. The Explorers added one more run in the bottom of the third as junior Kelli Curcio (Hatboro, PA/ St. Basil) singled in sophomore Angelina Bisbiglia (Sewell, NJ/ Camden Catholic) to finish the scoring for La Salle as the contest ended in a mercy-rule 14-0 win.
The Explorers bats did not cool off in the second game as Shepherd opened the contest with a triple to right field, and scored on a passed ball from Hawks pitcher Mishayla Truttman.
UMES could not figure out Explorer rookie pitcher Kristin Paoletti (Aldan, PA/ Archbishop Prendergast) as she struck out five and gave up just one run in the game.
La Salle sophomore Mary Pat Conville (Jamison, PA/ Archbishop Wood) singled to lead off the third inning and was walked in for a score. Conville went 2-4 with two singles. Bisbiglia scored on a fielder's choice and senior Kate Gulkis (Philadelphia, PA/ St. Basil) would bring another run in to make it 4-0.
Paoletti helped her own cause at the plate with a RBI double in the fifth, and eventually scored to add two more.
In the sixth, Bisbiglia would end the game early with a two-run homer (her second of the year) to make it 8-0 and walk off with another La Salle win.
