ORLANDO, FL - The La Salle University Men's tennis team recently traveled to Orlando, FL to embark on the spring season that lay ahead of them. The Explorers played three matches in Orlando, going 1-2 overall. Their fourth match against Creighton was cancelled due to rain.
In their first match, La Salle took on Lake Superior State. The Explorers showed no signs of jet lag, jumping on the Lakers from the get-go, cruising to a 7-2 win. In doubles, the duo of George Gennaoui and Jon Maula cruised to a 8-4 win at #1, while the senior duo of Corey Hanson and Eric Glick won at #3, 8-3. Ryan Knarr and Andy Petrusky were downed 8-4 at #2 doubles.
In singles, It was much of the same story with La Salle taking five of the six matches, while throwing some bagels into the score line. Chris Butera won at #6, 6-2, 6-3, while Maula cruised to an easy 6-0, 6-2 win at #5. Glick was able to dominate his opponent, 6-3, 6-0, while Matt Rivera won 7-5, 6-1 at #3. Petrusky played well in a 6-2, 6-3 win at #2, while #1 player George Gennaoui lost in a closely contested match, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The second match of La Salle's trip to the Sunshine State was against Grand Valley State. The Lakers looked sharp against the Explorers, winning two of the three doubles matches en route to a 7-0 victory. Only Maula and Gennaoui were able to win at #1 doubles by an 8-5 score. In singles, the top two matches were tightly contested. At #1 singles, Gennaoui lost to Tony Dang, who controlled the big points of the match with punishing forehand winners. At #2, Ryan Knarr played well in a three hour marathon match against Renato Tamashiro, but came up just short, falling 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 10-3. At #3, Glick was double bageled, 6-0, 6-0, while Maula lost 6-1, 6-4 at #4 singles. It was much of the same story at #5 singles, as Rivera was downed 6-4, 6-1, while Chris Butera lost at #6, 6-2 6-1.
The Explorers third match of the week was against Vincennes University. In doubles, the three Explorers teams fought tooth and nail to the end, but all three came up empty by the same exact score of 8-6. In singles, Vincennes outplayed the Explorers for most of the day. At #1 singles, David Jackson beat Gennaoui 6-1, 7-5, while Petrusky went on to lose in a quick 6-0, 6-1 defeat. At #3, senior Eric Glick used his elusive speed to stay neck and neck with Binky Nikou of Vincennes, but came up just short, losing 6-4, 6-4. At #4, Chris King took down Explorer Jon Maula 6-1, 6-4, while Matt Rivera came up just short after playing a tight first set, 7-5, 6-2. Chris Butera was a bright spot for the Explorers at #6, winning a tight match 6-1, 2-6, 10-8.
