Dertouzos Picks Up Big 5 Honor

April 14, 2008

PHILADELPHIA - Senior catcher Mike Dertouzos has been selected as the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player of the Week after batting .583 for the week against the Atlantic 10 Conference's first-place Duquesne Dukes, in voting conducted by the schools' head coaches and sports information offices.

Dertouzos, who entered the week batting .229 for the season, had at least two hits in all three games against the Dukes, including a three-hit performance to help the Explorers hand Duquesne just their second conference loss of the season.

The three-hit performance tied his career-high for hits in a game, while he also drove in two runs and scored another in the 8-5 victory on Saturday. He also drove in a pair in Friday's loss and was the only Explorer to have two hits in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

He raised his batting average to .269 for the season and is hitting .333 in A-10 games only, which is second-best on the team to only John Rickards' .380 conference-only average. His 14 hits in conference games is tied for second with John Malloy and trails just Rickards' (19).

Overall, he is fifth on the team in hits (29), fourth in runs (13), third in doubles (8), and tied for second in RBI (15).

La Salle has a busy week, travelling to Villanova (Tuesday, 3:15 PM) and Penn (Wednesday, 3 PM) before hosting Fordham for a three-game A-10 series starting Friday at 3 PM.

Temple senior Mike Mongiardini took the Pitcher of the Week honor after not allowing a run in 5.1 innings of three-hit ball in Temple's 11-1 win over Richmond for his second honor of the year - tying with La Salle's Kevin Fuqua.

Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in the city that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday during the season and the third All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
