Horsham, PA - On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 30th students of Hollowell Elementary School were treated to a special presentation by La Salle University basketball standout and NCAA Three-point Shoot-out Champion Darnell Harris.
The senior who finished his stellar career as the La Salle, Atlantic 10 and Big 5 career leader in three-point field goals joined Hollowell principal and La Salle alum Steve Glaize ('94) in discussing leadership skills and positive role-modeling as part of the schools' Go for Three program.
"Most people think I just went to La Salle to play basketball but to tell you the truth the main reason I went there was the education," said Harris who will walk in graduation ceremonies next weekend. "To tell you the truth - I think education is far more important than basketball."
The Go for Three program teaches the students about three levels of behavior with Level 1 being "unacceptable" and Level 2- "acceptable". Harris encouraged the kids to go for Level 3 - "outstanding" by employing the same skills that he used as a captain, four-year starter, All Atlantic 10 performer and the school's 16th all-time leading scorer.
Harris discussed instances such as helping his teammates with homework and in practice and keeping people loose and in a good mood as well as general behavioral habits such as being reliable, prepared and always on time,
"I tried to set an example by always being at practice on time and always doing what I was supposed to," Harris told the group of 275 students from kindergarten through third grade. "But maybe even more importantly, in the few instances that I did not do what was expected of me, I took responsibility for my actions."
Principal Glaize was inspired to invite Harris to the event after watching him defeat the best senior three-pointer shooters in America in the annual contest held during the Final Four and shown live on ESPN, "We have a unique mix of students here and what they all can use is a good example of someone who has achieved such great things but is a positive example of leadership and a solid citizen.," said Glaize.
