Philadelphia, PA- It was a proud day for two former La Salle University student-athletes as they made their way to Drexel University to participate in the 90th Annual Army ROTC Task Force Dragon Commissioning Ceremony.
Class of 2008's Joe Gouryeb (Cinnaminson, NJ/ Holy Cross) a former men's soccer manager and Brian McKenna (Upper Darby, PA/ Valley Forge Military Academy)- a former linebacker on the La Salle football squad, officially became second lieutenants in the U.S. Army at a ceremony attended by four-star General William S. Wallace.
"Victory starts here, and it starts with you," stated Wallace.
Both second lieutenants will be taking different paths to victory, as Gouryeb- who earned the ROTC's George C. Marshall award earlier this year awarded to the most outstanding cadet in Drexel's ROTC program- will head to Fort Sill in Oklahoma for the Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC). After that a trip to Fort Benning in Georgia is planned before ending up at Fort Drum, New York , in the 10th Mountain Division. Gouryeb's branch is military intelligence, detailed infantry.
McKenna will become part of the New Jersey National Guard in the armor branch after taking courses at Fort Benning. He plans on getting his master's degree in Finance at Rutgers University while in the National Guard.
