Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle women's lacrosse team has recently announced two new additions to its coaching roster for the upcoming season. Shannon Witzel, a 2007 graduate of Towson University, has been named the fulltime assistant coach and Kylie Flett, a 2007 graduate of Notre Dame College, has been assigned as the graduate assistant coach.
Witzel's primary job will be working with all field players, whereas Flett will concentrate her time on the goalkeepers.
Witzel begins her campaign as a La Salle assistant coach after serving as a volunteer assistant at Towson last season. An All-CAA First Team honoree in 2006, Witzel started every single game during her four-year tenure at Towson. In 2005, she led the nation in goals per game (3.74), while also setting the program's all-time record with 71 goals that season.
In 2004, the two-time team captain set a Towson freshman record with 44 goals and 53 points, which ultimately awarded her as the University's Rookie of the Year. The three-time CAA Rookie of the Week honoree went on to lead the team and the conference in scoring during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. She finished with 208 career goals, tying her for most goals by a player at Towson. In 2007, Witzel was named to the All-CAA Second Team and also to the IWLCA All-Mid Atlantic Region Second Team. Her senior performance that year led her to become Towson University's Female Athlete of the Year.
A 2003 graduate of Pottstown High School, Witzel set a school record with 262 career goals. She was also a three-sport athlete who played basketball and field hockey.
Flett comes to La Salle after playing under new head coach Candace Taglianetti at Notre Dame College for the past four years. A three-time team captain, Flett started all four years during her collegiate campaign at Notre Dame College.
In college, Flett maintained at least a 53 save percentage over her four-year career which included a 60.5 save percentage in 2007. Flett, Notre Dame College's leader in every goalkeeping category, played in 58 career games and combined for over 600 career saves.
Flett was a member of the U19 Australian National Team that won the Silver medal at the 1999 World Cup and she hopes to take part in the 2010 World Cup in Prague as a goalkeeper for Team Australia.
