The barbecue that preceded the men's soccer game versus Drexel on September 10 was well attended and brought attention to the city rivalry match. Attendants were treated to burgers, wings, hot dogs and other pre-game favorites. Explorer fans, composed of students, faculty and staff members and the parents of men's soccer players, discussed strategies for the upcoming game as well as the fall sports programs in general.
The barbecue was implemented as part of the on-going efforts by the Athletic Department to draw focus to the various sports programs at La Salle. The estimated 1,000 fans that stayed to cheer at the game experienced the strong 2-0 victory by the Explorers over the Dragons.
According to Promotions Coordinator, Alicia Pennacchia, "As an Athletic Department, we strive to highlight the talents of each of our programs. While the focus of this event was on the men's soccer team, we look forward to future events with a variety of other teams, both in the fall and spring seasons."
The Athletics staff is in the final planning stages for a daytime volleyball match versus Temple on Tuesday, September 23, to which various youth are invited and will be treated to lunch and the game. Similarly, the department looks to continue their tradition of Elementary School Day, in which local elementary school students are invited to enjoy lunch and a basketball game at Tom Gola Arena. This year, plans are being set for the women's basketball game versus Richmond on January 14. Future plans also include a barbecue preceding a women's lacrosse game in the spring.
