Sept. 19, 2008
On September 19, 2008, more than 50 Explorer student-athletes facilitated the building of a brand new playground on the school grounds of James Logan Elementary School. Also assisting with the construction were members of the athletics coaching and administrative staff as well as students from La Salle's University Ministry and Service.
From 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Explorers worked tirelessly, constructing four half basketball courts, laying the rubber grounds on the pavement for the playground to sit on and assembling the elements of the new play land.
Another major piece of the recess yard makeover was the repainting of the Logan Headstart Program portable building, which houses the pre-K program at the elementary school. La Salle student-athletes painted the entire exterior, which is complete with a colorful mural on the face of the building.
On Monday morning, Logan students, who once called an empty parking lot their playground, will be greeted by brightly colored slides, monkey bars and ramps as well as basketball courts and freshly painted hopscotch lines.
According to Project Teamwork Director, Mike Ellerson, "The students are so excited to have this playground, which was donated by Keystone Mercy. They really deserve a place to have fun and enjoy being kids. The administrators at Logan are grateful, as always, to the La Salle Athletic Department for teaming up with them to make great things happen."
The building of the playground was a part of the ongoing initiatives of La Salle's Project Teamwork and helps to further the longstanding relationship between La Salle and Logan. Just one day before the playground build, the two schools held a luncheon to celebrate a new school year and the continuation of the Big Brothers Big Sisters school-based mentoring program between La Salle and Logan students.
