Explorers Stunned in Frenzied Finish of 2-1 Loss

Sept. 7, 2008

Box Score

Philadelphia, PA- Samantha Lawless’ goal with one minute and 27 seconds left in regulation proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 Robert Morris (2-2) victory over the La Salle University Explorers (1-3) on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at La Salle’s Hank DeVincent Field.

The game went scoreless for the first 66 minutes and 27 seconds before the Colonials’ Mary Kate Egan was given a green card for elbowing the Explorers’ Maria Allegretto to the ground inside of the circle.  Allegretto beat goalie Stephanie Seeley to capitalize on La Salle’s first penalty stroke of the season and give the Explorers a 1-0 lead.  It was Allegretto’s second goal of the season.

With Egan forced to sit out for the rest of regulation and playing one player down the Colonials struck back just one minute and 36 seconds later when Jessica Charles pushed one past Emma Ruth to tie the game.

Only 30 seconds later Lawless was able to fish a ball free from Ruth’s pads and knock it home for the game-winner.

The Explorers made a strong push and gained two corners in the final seconds but could not even the score.

The Explorers dominated the first half, outshooting their guests 10-5 and taking seven corners while defending only three but just could not fill the cage.

Sophomore Beth Carey and freshman Lindsay Fry each launched three shots with all three of Carey’s finding the keeper.

The Explorers will travel to Towson to tangle with the Tigers on Wednesday, September 10th at 4:00 PM.
