Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle men's and women's swimming & diving team, after a little over a month off, returned to the pool over the weekend for the Rhode Island Invitational which featured four Atlantic 10 schools including host Rhode Island, George Washington and Massachusetts. The women, who never won this invite before, finished in first place with 506 total points and the men followed up second in their standings with 491.5 total points.
Over the course of the weekend, both the men and women totaled six relay events where they finished in the top two. The women picked up two first place finishes which included: 400-yard medley relay (sophomore Jessica Carbin, junior Shannon Duval and seniors Carrie Houck and Carleen Caldwell; 3:59.51) and the 200-yard medley relay (sophomore Alex Stoddart, Duval and sophomores Aubrey Cefalo and Holly Biro; 1:50.02). The Explorer women also picked up second place honors in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Biro, Caldwell, Stoddart and Cefalo; 1:40.11).
On the men's side, they also picked up two first place finishes and a second place finish. The men finished first in both the 200-yard medley relay (sophomore Dustin Gibb, senior David Ellerson, junior Matt Harner and freshman Austin Thomas; 1:37.03) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Gibb, senior Chris Cefalo, Ellerson and Thomas; 3:15.48). The men finished second in the 400-yard medley relay (Gibb, Ellerson, Harner and Cefalo; 3:38.10).
Aside from her relay performances, Duval also picked up three first place finishes in the 200-yard IM (2:10.94), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.74) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.41). Freshman Emily Heath also had a strong weekend with two second place honors in the 400-yard IM (4:41.07) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.09) and a third place prize in the 200-yard IM (2:12.88).
Junior Brittany Sedberry finished first in the 400-yard IM (4:39.56) and second in the 200-yard IM (2:12.17).
Ellerson finished as the top swimmer in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.12) and the runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.24). Freshman Jordan Baker finished with the best total score in the 3-meter diving event with 281.00 points.
The Explorers travel to Fordham University on Saturday, Jan. 24 for a 1:00 PM meet time.
