Rendall Does It Again: Senior Hurdler Tops Field at Prestigious Navy Meet

PHILADELPHIA - Senior hurdler Steven Rendall won the 60 meter hurdle event for the second consecutive week to lead the Explorers at the prestigious Wesley A. Brown Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday.

The Explorers competed against a power-packed field on Saturday, including perennial NCAA power Tennessee, 21st-ranked Georgetown, Ivy power Princeton and ACC squad Maryland as well as host Navy.

Rendall clocked an IC4A-qualifying time of 8.16 in the 60m hurdle finals to handily defeat NCAA 6th-ranked Charlton Rolle of Tennessee, who came in sixth today. Rendall qualified for the finals with a first-place time of 8.15, and has now also ran an IC4A time for the second straight week.

He also competed in the 200 meter dash for the first time this season and won his heat with a time of 22.67 seconds.

David Alfano also gave a strong performance today as he finished second in the 3000 meter run with an IC4A time of 8:17.61. Trevon Rainford and Sean Ward also competed in the event and finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 14-runner field. Rainford ran an 8:27.58 and Ward turned in a season-best 8:28.09 mark.

Three Explorers ran in the 5000 meter event as well. Andrew Wagoner ran a 15:09.50 for sixth place out of nine, while Patrick McAllister (15:17.63) and Matthew Mitchell (15:28.41) finished seventh and ninth.

The distance medley relay team of Korey Edwards, Ashton Johnson, Sean Mallon and Colin Barrett qualified for the IC4A's with a 10:12.96 mark.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Andrew Maxwell, Terence McPeak, Jared David and Orestes Medina finished third in their event with a time of 3:20.33. The quartet defeated Princeton, Tennessee and Navy, and finished just two seconds behind Maryland and Georgetown.

The Explorers return to action next Friday at the Penn State Invitational while several Explorers will also compete at the University of Delaware on Saturday.
