PHILADELPHIA - La Salle swimming & diving kicked off the 2009-10 season on Friday with a home meet against city rival Villanova and conference rival Richmond. The men were victorious over Villanova, 201-98, however, the women came up on the short end with a 218-75 loss to Villanova and a 180-99 loss to Richmond.
On the men's side, six Explorers ended the day with at least two first-place finishes: senior Owen Black (200-yard medley relay, 1:36.43; 400-yard free relay, 3:14.25), sophomore Edward Carnes (100-yard back, 53.91; 200-yard back, 1:57.48), sophomore Leslie McGann (1-meter, 293.10; 3-meter, 297.08), sophomore Austin Thomas (50-yard free, 21.74; 100-yard fly, 54.31; 200-yard medley relay, 1:36.43; 400-yard free relay, 3:14.25), freshman Dan Fitzgerald (200-yard medley relay, 1:36.43; 400-yard free relay, 3:14.25) and freshman Blase Szyzsko (100-yard breast, 59.38; 200-yard breast, 2:13.48; 200-yard medley relay, 1:36.43).
Senior Shannon Duval posted a first-place score in the 200-yard breast (2:20.38) and a second-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:10.64). She recorded the fourth-best time in the 100-yard breast (1:07.44) and freshman Elizabeth Jordan preceded her time at 1:07.31.
Freshman Zach Anderson clocked in with the best 1000-yard free time (10:03.27) and sophomore Laurie McLaughlin posted second-place scores in both the 1-meter (259.20) and 3-meter (237.23).
Other key standouts included: sophomore Joe Jung (200-yard fly, 1:58.16), freshman Tom Lawrie (200-yard IM, 1:58.76), freshman Kyle Goan (50-yard free, 22.20), senior Brittany Sedberry (200-yard fly, 2:13.14), sophomore Emily Heath (200-yard breast, 2:27.39) and freshman Elizabeth Jordan (50-yard free, 24.97).
The Explorers embark on their first road trip of the season when they take on Drexel tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. ET.
