Explorer Alum Sean Quigley Winner Of 2009 Boston Mayor's Cup

Oct. 28, 2009

PHILADELPHIA - Former All-American and Explorer standout Sean Quigley '08 captured gold in the 2009 Boston Mayor's Cup race on Sunday. The eight-kilometer race in Boston's Franklin Park was a homecoming for Quigley, a Braintree, MA, native who won the 2002 cross country state championship on the same course.

Quigley clocked a 23:54 to outlast defending champion Jacob Korir (23:55) of Kenya by one second. He did not hold the lead throughout the race, but outsprinted Korir near the finish line to capture the title. Korir - a three-time NCAA All-American - won last year's Mayor's Cup also in 23:54.

Quigley's one-second win marked the closest race in the 20 year history of the Mayor's Cup.

Rounding out the top five were Ireland's Andrew Ledwith (23:57), Boston College's Timothy Ritchie (24:02) and Lucas Meyer (24:10) of the Boston Athletic Association.

For his effort, Quigley was named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week.

The win marks the second major win of 2009 for the Explorer alum. Quigley opened the year with a first place finish at the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run in Central Park on New Year's Eve.
