Box Score
PHILADELPHIA - Three goals in a four-minute span starting just 7:35 into the game was all La Salle needed en route to a 4-1 win over visiting Marist in the final non-conference game of the season. The Explorers now head into Atlantic 10 play with a 4-5-1 record, while Marist will now begin MAAC play with a 4-4-1 mark. The Red Foxes came into the game ranked fifth in the North Atlantic region.
Dan Korenyi (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) kicked off the scoring in the seventh minute. The Explorers were awarded a corner kick, which Ryan Richter (Southampton, PA/William Tennent) took from the left side of the field. Korenyi picked up Richter's kick into the box and put the ball into the back of the net for score number one.
Nick Dundon (Horsham, PA/Wisconsin-Green Bay) struck next. Dundon took the free kick awarded from a Marist foul, and lined it into the net at the 9:33 mark.
The Explorers pushed the score to 3-0 just over a minute later when Jeff Pio (Warminster, PA/William Tennent) scored in the same exact fashion as the first goal. Richter launched in a corner kick, which Pio picked up this time for the score and his first collegiate goal.
The Marist defense settled in after that, but the game remained very physical and intense between the teams. The Red Foxes picked up three yellow cards in a span of 17 minutes in the first half, while the Explorers picked up three in the second half. The two teams were whistled for a combined 17 fouls in the first half alone.
The score remained at 3-0 until Marist's Joe Touloumis broke up the shutout bid in the 53rd minute. Tim Garger passed the ball across the top of the box, which Touloumis sent in low for the score.
However, the Explorers put the game away for good in the 69th minute when Richter headed in a pass from Jim Guntle (Great Falls, VA/Georgetown Prep) for the final 4-1 score.
The home team held a commanding 17-10 advantage on shots, with 12 of those coming in the first half. Marist picked up five corner kicks to La Salle's three, but did not capitalize on them.
Kyle Quigley (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) earned the win in goal and made four saves in the effort. Tom DeBenedetto minded the net for the Red Foxes and made six saves.
The Explorers return to action next Friday (10/9) when they head to Duquesne for the conference opener at 7:00 PM. They continue on the road next Sunday (10/11) as they visit St. Bonaventure for a 2:00 PM contest.
