MOREHEAD, KY – La Salle University Baseball evened its record this season after a doubleheader sweep over the Eagles with a 6-4 and 21-6 sweep of Morehead State in non-conference action Saturday at Allen Field.

TJ Chism was the Explorers catalyst during the day with a combined 6-for-9 effort with four runs scored, nine RBI and two home runs, including a grand slam.

Three other Explorers had four hits on the afternoon and drove in three runs – Dennis Burge and John Malloy also each scored three runs, while Marc Schoch scored once.

GAME 1

La Salle jumped out to a quick three-run lead after the first inning, as Malloy and Chism each drove in a run – Malloy with a double, scoring Burge; Chism’s single scored Justin Handler.

Chism would later come around to score in the frame on a Jeff Flax two-out single.

The long ball hurt the Explorers in the contest, as the four Morehead State runs scored on home runs. In the third, Drew Lee hit a two-run shot and Eric Bainer tied the game in the fourth with a solo shot.

Bainer would give the Eagles a 4-3 lead in the sixth with another solo home run – hit off of reliever Christian Schulz, his first earned run allowed this season in seven innings pitched.

Morehead State held the Explorers scoreless for seven innings after the first, but La Salle rallied back to take the lead in the top of the ninth.

They loaded the bases with two out and Malloy came through with a hit to plate the tying run and Chism followed with a two-RBI single to put La Salle ahead 6-4.

Cody Weiss, who relieved Schulz in the eighth and struck out two, closed out the ninth with a pair of strikeouts and a grounder to earn his first collegiate victory. Drew Gerhart started the game for La Salle, went four innings with three Ks.

GAME 2

Again, the Explorers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning. For the second time this season, Malloy and Chism hit back-to-back home runs, with Malloy opening the game with a two-run homer followed by Chism’s solo shot.

Chism was not finished, smashing a grand slam in the fourth inning to double the Explorers lead – from a four-run lead into 8-0. In all, Chism drove in six RBI in the second game, the most since Rich Prall knocked in six versus Massachusetts, April 14, 2006.

The Explores continued to tack on runs, as Burge belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning and Handler knocking one out – a two-run shot – in the sixth.

La Salle (3-3) and Morehead State (0-4) are scheduled to play one more on Sunday starting at 12 PM.
