Explorers Fall to Penn on Senior Day

Philadelphia, PA – It was Senior Day at Kirk Pool on Thursday, however, the La Salle men’s and women’s swimming & diving team could not get past the Penn Quakers. In the meet, the La Salle men lost, 167-132, and the women did as well, 169-130.

Making their last rounds as La Salle student-athletes were seniors Chris Cefalo, Carleen Caldwell, David Ellerson, Carrie Houck and Tanya Lindenmuth.

Carleen Caldwell helped the Explorers to a first place finish at the very start of the meet. Caldwell, alongside sophomore Alex Stoddart, junior Shannon Duval and sophomore Holly Biro, finished with the best time in the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.28). Caldwell also went on to finish second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.97) and Duval was the runner-up in the 50-yard breaststroke (31.34).

David Ellerson swam a leg in the 200-yard medley relay with sophomore Dustin Gibb and juniors Matt Harner and Owen Black. Their time of 1:35.60 provided them with a first place finish. Ellerson, who also placed second in the 50-yard breaststroke (27.18), teamed up with fellow classmate Chris Cefalo, in addition to Black and Harner, and finished with a second place time of 1:28.49 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

In the diving events, freshman Laurie McLaughlin finished with the top score in the 1-meter diving event (239.55) and she also finished second in the 3-meter diving event (239.62).

Freshman Austin Thomas finished with first place honors in both the 100-yard butterfly (53.11) and the 50-yard butterfly (23.99).

For the other seniors, Carrie Houck placed third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.65) and Tanya Lindenmuth picked up third place honors in the 3-meter diving event (224.85).
