Kennedy, Weiss Combine to Shut Out UM-Eastern Shore, 2-0

March 12, 2009

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Sean Kennedy scattered five hits and struck out a career-high six batters in eight innings of work and Cody Weiss picked up his first collegiate save as La Salle Baseball got back in the win column with a 2-0 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore Thursday at Hawks Stadium.

Three Explorers had a pair of hits in the game, as both Jeff Flax and Brian Meagher also drove in a single run with theirs. The other, John Malloy, registered his sixth multi-hit game of the year.

Kennedy, a lefthander, had just one base runner to his back (on third) the entire game. It was in the second inning, when UMES had runners on the corners with one out.

However, he escaped the jam with a double play - Jorge Pichardo popped up to second and Russel Deutschmann tried to score, but Flax threw him out at the plate.

Flax returned to the dugout with his team and when he came back out - to the plate in the top of the third - he singled home Brendan Norton with first run of the game.

Kennedy allowed a single to Phil Vaughn to lead of the bottom of the frame, but then retired 16 of the next 20 batters. He got the first two outs of every inning until the ninth and none of those that reached touched second base.

In the top of the eighth, Meagher singled home Zack Feierstein - who walked and moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt - which gave La Salle a 2-0 lead.

UMES (2-13) started the ninth with a single by Elliott Alston, which had the Explorers call for Weiss.

With one out, Franklin Armstrong singled to put a pair of runners on, but it was short-lived, as Feierstein picked Armstrong off at first and Weiss got the final out with a pop to short.

La Salle (5-5) ends its streak of five straight games scoring at least six runs - the longest stretch since April 7-17, 2004 when they did it six times in a row.

The Explorers now return home for a three-game home stand, facing Cleveland State, Friday at 3:15 PM, Saint Peter's, Saturday at 3:00 PM, and Manhattan, Sunday at 12:00 PM - all at Hank DeVincent Field.
