PHILADELPHIA - Drew Gerhart allowed just one earned run over six innings, however La Salle Baseball left seven men on base in a 2-0 loss to the visiting Cleveland State Vikings on Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
Gerhart surrendered eight hits and walked one, while striking out four in six innings. Christian Schulz (2.1 IP) and Craig Miller (0.2 IP) finished off the game with three scoreless innings.
However, it was Cleveland State starter Josh Hungerman that threw a two-hit complete game shutout for the Vikings, striking out 11. He did give the Explorers chances with four walks and a hit batter.
Cleveland State (3-7) plated an unearned run in the fourth inning, then Tyler Wynn gave them a two-run lead with an RBI double in the sixth, scoring Hungerman.
La Salle had a runner on second in four straight innings (fourth-seventh), but TJ Chism was stranded twice and Brian Meagher once.
The Explorers best chance to break up the shutout was in the seventh, when Jeff Flax broke up Hungerman's no hitter with a lead-off single to right. Meagher followed with a single through the left side and both moved up a base on a passed ball.
Hungerman then struck out Zack Feierstein and got Dennis Burge to line into a double play. He retired the next six Explorers to improve his record to 1-2 this spring. Gerhart suffered the loss and is now 1-1.
La Salle (5-6) will continue its three-game home stand hosting Saint Peter's on Saturday at 3 PM.
