PHILADELPHIA - A first game pitcher's duel and second game slugfest both went the way of the visiting Saint Peter's Peahens, as La Salle fell 2-0 and 10-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The Explorers fall to 3-11 overall while the Peahens improve to 6-8.
Junior Gina Massaro and the Peahens' Tricia Reingle were locked in a pitcher's duel as both pitched scoreless gems through three innings. Reingle helped her own cause though with a solo home run in the fourth inning for the winning run.
Meg Papierniak drove in the insurance run in the sixth with a one-out double down the left field line.
Angelina Bisbiglia doubled to left center in the seventh and Shannon Skomorucha reached base when she was hit by a pitch. They advanced to second and third on a passed ball, but Reingle pitched herself out of the jam with two strikeouts.
Strikeouts were the name of the game. Reingle racked up 11 K's and Massaro sat down a team-season-high seven. The Explorers were held to two hits, while the Peahens managed four. Both pitchers allowed only one walk each.
Game two proved entirely opposite as the two teams combined for 23 hits and 12 runs. Massaro singled to short left field in the third inning and Mary Pat Conville drove her in with a two-out double to left center.
The Explorer lead did not last long as the Peahens hit hard for three runs in the fourth and five in the fifth. Reingle, who played third base in the second game, continued her offensive assault in the fifth inning with her second homer of the day - a three-RBI knock to left center. She added a third home run in the seventh inning.
Breanna DiTommaso singled in Ali Shepherd - who reached on a fielder's choice - in the fifth inning for the Explorers' second score.
DJ Guinn suffered the loss on the mound. She pitched 4.1 innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits, while striking out four. Kristin Paoletti pitched 2.2 innings in relief. She gave up three runs on four hits while striking out two. The Peahens' Jessica LaBovick earned the W by going four innings, giving up one run on six hits and striking out seven. Stefanie Marrs pitched three innings in relief. She gave up one run on four hits and struck out two.
The Explorers head on the road this weekend as they visit Fordham on Friday at 3:00 PM and again on Saturday at noon.
