La Salle and Logan Celebrate Another Successful Year

April 16, 2009

Philadelphia, PA – Project Teamwork and Big Brothers/Big Sisters celebrated another successful year between the partnership with La Salle University and Logan Elementary School today. The mentoring program, which has been in effect for five years now, matches up La Salle student-athletes with children who attend Logan.

Students, faculty and administration from both schools gathered in the Logan Elementary School gymnasium for their annual End of the Year Luncheon. Each student-athlete interacted with their “little” over the course of the afternoon along with the rest of the children in attendance. The “big” and “little” association represents the relationship between each La Salle student-athlete (big) and their elementary school match (little).

“The children see their ‘bigs’ as not only friends, but as role models,” said Allaire Speers, the Match Support Specialist for Big Brothers/Big Sisters. “Interacting with these college students is something that the children look forward to. Some of the kids can actually tell me ahead of time when their ‘bigs’ are coming to visit.”

Aside from today’s traditional function, the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program held an event at a La Salle basketball home game back in February. Matches from both La Salle and Logan, family members and friends were invited to the game to take part in the fun.
