Philadelphia, PA- Kevin Bonner has been named Assistant Athletic Director for Communications and Promotions at La Salle University.
Bonner, who spent the last five years at Temple University, started with the Owls as Coordinator of Athletic Publications in 2004, was promoted to Assistant Director of Sports Media Relations/Publications in 2005 and named Assistant Director of Athletics last summer.
Bonner will manage the Explorer Athletic Communications office and also assume responsibility for the Athletic Promotions program. He will report to former Director of Athletic Communications, Kale Beers, who was recently promoted to Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs.
"We are pleased to have Kevin take charge of the Athletic Communications operation," said Beers. "He is tremendously respected in the sports information field and brings the creative energy, skill and knowledge necessary to excel in the position. His exceptional talent in publications and knowledge of new media will really advance the office and increase the visibility and public profile of Explorer Athletics."
Bonner was named the University Division Rising Star by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA) at its annual workshop this year in San Antonio, TX. The award is presented to a University Division member with 10 years of service or less whose work at their institution and service, dedication; energy and enthusiasm to the profession make that individual a "rising star" in sports information.
"I am excited and honored to have been selected to lead the publicity efforts of Explorer athletics," Bonner said. "I'd like to thank Dr. Tom Brennan, Kale Beers, John Lyons and the entire search committee for choosing me and I look forward to promoting La Salle student-athletes and their achievements on and off the playing field."
Besides serving as the media contact for four Owl sports (baseball, golf, men's tennis and women's tennis), he also served as the varsity sport administrator for the TU golf program. He was the secondary media contact for the Temple men's basketball team and traveled with the team to the 2009 NCAA Tournament First Round in Miami, FL.
His publications have been cited 12 times by Co-SIDA in district or national contests. Two of his media guide covers received "Best in the Nation" awards and his 2007 Temple football media guide was ranked seventh nationally.
Bonner also was instrumental in the formation of the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball organization in 2006. He has coordinated the weekly player of the week voting and the postseason all-city team for the five Division I baseball playing universities in Philadelphia.
Prior to his work at Temple he spent two years at Saint Joseph's as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications. He graduated Cum Laude from Elizabethtown College ('02) with a bachelor's degree in computer science and was also a four-year letter winner in baseball. He earned his master's degree in sport and recreation management from Temple in 2008.
