PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle Volleyball Team entered Tuesday night in search of its first win on the season. Despite Saint Peter’s last second attempt at a comeback, the Explorers capitalized in the fifth and final set for the win, 3-2 (25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 13-25, 15-10).
The Explorers, who pushed ahead early in the first set with a 9-7 lead, increased their advantage with six straight points to make it 15-7.
Saint Peter’s evened things up after winning the second set and went on to lead the Explorers by five, 16-11, in the third. From there, La Salle erupted on a 14-3 run to end the third set, 25-19.
Freshman Lauren Noga gave the Explorers their first win with the game-winning kill in the fifth set, 15-10.
Noga ended the evening with a match-high 16 kills, seven digs and four assisted blocks. Senior Rachel Stemper recorded the team’s only double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs and freshman Samantha Tulskie followed up with a match-high 30 digs and five kills.
Sophomore Kourtney Clark added 17 assists and 10 digs, junior Carly Conlon totaled 22 assists for a team-high and freshman Breanna Mazalewski contributed five kills, four assists, five digs and three total blocks (two assisted, one solo).
For the Peahens, juniors Katie McFadden and Kim Mendoza posted 14 kills and 16 digs and 13 kills and 17 digs, respectively. Junior Shannon Doheny led all participants with 32 assists.
The Explorers (1-4) will head to the Palestra this weekend to take part in the Big 5 Tournament. They will face Villanova on Friday at 4 PM.
