PHILADELPHIA - Ryan Richter scored the game-winning goal and Glenroy Chapman added an insurance score as the La Salle men's soccer team shut out Pittsburgh 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the City of Pittsburgh Invitational. The Explorers have now registered two straight shutouts and scored six goals during their western Pennsylvania roadtrip this weekend. The win pushes the Blue and Gold to 2-1-1, while the Panthers drop to 1-4.
With the 2-0 record this weekend, the Explorers were named team champion of the Pittsburgh Invite. Both the Explorers and Wisconsin-Green Bay finished the tournament with identical records but the Explorers won the team title by outscoring Green Bay. The all-tournament team is yet to be named.
The Explorers have now won their last two meetings with Pitt, as they beat the Panthers 3-2 in overtime on Sept. 4, 2005. The last time they recorded two straight shutouts was in the 2004 season when they knocked off Massachusetts 2-0 on Oct. 24, 2004, and won 1-0 at Xavier on Oct. 29.
Richter opened the scoring in the 34th minute. Ryan Sepe nailed a shot into the crossbar, and Richter picked up the rebound to sink it in for the game-winning score.
Kyle Quigley and Jeff Pio set up Chapman's goal in the 55th minute. Quigley punted the ball down the field and Pio flicked the punt over to Chapman to send him on a breakaway to put the score at 2-0.
The Panthers had several chances, especially in the first half. Ryan Brode sent a shot in at the 21:19 mark, which bounced off the crossbar. The ball stayed on the Pitt end of the field, and three shots were taken in a matter of 30 seconds. Quigley came up with two big saves and another shot went high to prevent the Panthers from getting on the scoreboard. Quigley came up with two more big saves in the first half to preserve the 1-0 Explorer lead heading into halftime.
The Panthers held the advantage in shots taken (17-11) and in corner kicks (7-1). The Explorers were hit with 12 of the Panther's 17 shots in the first half, but kept the home team off the board.
Quigley stopped five shots, four of those in the first half, to earn his second shutout. Panther goalie Keegan Gunderson stopped five shots as well.
The Explorers continue their four-game road trip with a stop at Soccer Six rival Drexel on Wed., Sept. 16 at 4:00 PM.
