PHILADELPHIA -
Junior Beth Carey and freshman Rebecca Chylack were named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Co-Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office announced today. The duo helped La Salle to a 2-1 week by combining for four goals.
Carey earns her first career A-10 Player of the Week honor and the first for an Explorer since Ellen Axelsen received the award on August 27, 2007. The Lebanon, PA native scored a pair of goals and assisted on three more for a team high seven points this week. She set up Chylack on a corner for a goal with a minute left in regulation to tie the game at 3-3 versus Longwood on Friday. La Salle went on to defeat the Lancers, 4-3, in overtime.
The junior leads the Explorers in goals (four), assists (three) and points (11). She also ranks second in assists, third in the A-10 in points, and third in goals.
Chylack also picks up her first A-10 citation after scoring two goals, both on penalty corners, and assisting on two more. Her goal with one minute left in regulation versus Longwood forced overtime. The Souderton, PA native led the team with seven shots on the week, six on goal. Chylack also recorded game-winning goal versus Siena on Sunday.
She is fifth in the A-10 in points (eight) and goals (three). Chylack is the first rookie to receive Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors since Carey won three straight to begin the 2007 season.
The Explorers (3-4) return to action on Friday with a visit to Bucknell at 4 PM.
