Men's Swimming & Diving Earns Senior Day Win Over Fordham

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's swimming and diving team took a 180-118 win over Fordham, while the women fell 191-108, on Senior Day at Kirk Pool on Saturday.

The team's 12 seniors were honored in a pre-meet ceremony.

However, it was youth that ruled on Saturday as sophomore Jordan Baker and freshmen Blase Szyszko and Zach Anderson each captured two golds apiece to lead the men's squad. Szyszko continued his dominance in the breaststroke by winning both the 100- and 200-yard events. He clocked a 58.34 in the 100 yard and was once again the only sub-minute time this weekend. He won the 200 yard event with a 2:09.78. Joining Szyszko in the top three of the 200 yard breaststroke were Eric Patenaude (2nd; 2:21.54) and classmate Colson Ferrari (3rd; 2:13.52)

Anderson captured the wins in both the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events. His 500 time was 4:50.68, while he swam a 9:55.46 in the 1000 yarder. Rookie classmate Brian Batson was just two-tenths of a second behind in the 500-yard free as he placed second with a 4:50.88.

Baker won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events to lead the diving squad. He earned 287.25 points for his one meter dives, and bested the rest of the divers by 40+ points. Baker earned a 288.59 in the three meter dive, also for first place.

Rookie Kyle Goan added strong swims on Saturday as well, as he captured gold in the 50 yard freestyle with a 21.61 and second place in the 100 yard freestyle with a 48.45.

Owen Black and Batson went 1-2 in the 200 yard freestyle as Black clocked a 1:45.65 for the win and Batson swam a 1:46.48. Rounding out the individual wins was Tom Lawrie, who picked up a gold in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.84.

On the women's side, Shannon Duval and Emily Heath led the Explorers. Duval earned wins in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events, while Heath picked up a 1,000 freestyle win and second in the 500 free.

Duval clocked a time of 1:04.64 for the 100 yard breaststroke and a 2:15.51 for the 200 yarder. She also earned the win in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.36.

Heath swam a 10:21.75 in the 1000 free and a 5:07.34 in the 500. Emily Heath -1000 free - 10:21.75 - 1st... 500 free - 5:07.34 - 2nd

Laurie McLaughlin led the women's divers with a first place finish in the 3-meter diving event, as she earned 246.90 points.

The Explorers return to the pool next Saturday when they host St. Francis (PA) in a non-conference home meet in Kirk Pool, starting at 1:00 PM.
