Men's Track & Field Opens 2010 With Win At Delaware Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - The 2010 portion of the indoor track and field schedule started off strong as the Explorer men blasted past the competition at the University of Delaware Invitational on Friday night. The Explorers amassed 203 points, 100 better than second-place American University.

Rashad Little picked up two first-place finishes on Friday in the 60 meter and 200 meter dashes. He clocked a 7.15 in the 60m and a 23.19 in the 200m to add 20 points to the Explorer total.

Jerome Brown added a third place finish in the 200 meter race as he ran a 23.66.

The men's distance squad dominated the 3,000 meter race with all five of the top five finishers. Kasey Gellar led the race with an 8:59.12, followed by rookie Peter Frein in second with a time of 9:13.86. Rounding out the top five were Kevin Buell (9:14.07), Matt Finn (9:16.64) and Drew Morrissey (9:17.33).

Ozzie Henderson snagged the top finish in the 400 meter race as he clocked a 53.59. Brandon Clarke was less than a second behind with a time of 54.43 for fourth place.

Wayne Bartholomew and Nick Iuele added top three finishes in the 500 meter dash. Bartholomew topped the race with a 1:07.28 while Iuele placed third with a time of 1:08.54.

The men's 4x400 relay squad was also in action as they edged out conference rival Saint Joseph's by one-third of a second. The Explorers clocked a 3:35.15 to the Hawks' 3:35.48.

On the women's side, Maureen Benner picked up a first place finish as she ran a 3:12.76 in the 1,000 meter race. Kellilyn Fierras placed second in the mile run with a 5:16.18 to earn points for the Explorers.

Kyla Jones finished eighth out of 25 runners in the 60 meter dash as she clocked an 8.32. Lolita Thomas also ran and placed 13th with a time of 8.43 seconds.

Courtney McKnight also turned in a strong finish, coming in second in the 800 meter run with a 2:27.04.

Carolyn Crawford led the women's field squad as she earned second place in the triple jump and sixth (out of 14) in the long jump. She hit 4.71m (15-05.50) in the long jump and 10.16m (33-04.00) in the triple jump.

The Explorer women finished fourth out of six teams with 47 points. Navy won the meet with 272.5 points and host Delaware was second with 185.

The Explorers return to action next Friday (1/15) when they compete at the Gotham Cup at the Armory in New York City.
