McCarthy Named La Salle Student-Athlete of the Week

Oct. 25, 2010

PHILADELPHIA - Rookie goalkeeper John McCarthy has been named the La Salle Student-Athlete of the Week, based on a vote by the Office of Athletic Communications.

McCarthy helped lead the Explorers above .500 in Atlantic 10 play as he registered two straight shutouts on the road this past weekend. He stopped five shots in a 1-0 win over Richmond on Friday and six in a 2-0 win at George Washington on Sunday.

The Cinnaminson, NJ, native did not let a goal through in 28 shots faced on the weekend. His goals against average was lowered to 1.21 and he currently ranks second in the Atlantic 10 with a .843 save percentage. His 70 saves also ranks him second in the league.

With the two shutouts this weekend, he now has five on the season, tying him with Rich Scholer (1991) for fifth all-time on La Salle's list of shutouts in a season. One more blank moves him on to the all-time career shutouts list.

The wins this weekend vaulted the Explorers from 12th place into a six-way tie for third in the league standings. The top six teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament starting Nov. 11th in Charlotte, NC. The Explorers take a road trip to New England this weekend, facing Rhode Island on Friday at 7:00 PM and Massachusetts on Sunday at 1:00 PM. They close out the regular season at home, with Xavier on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 PM and with Dayton on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 1:00 PM.
