Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC – La Salle Women’s Basketball battled the #13/13 Georgetown Hoyas to the final buzzer but dropped a 50-46 decision Friday night in non-conference action at McDonough Arena.

Senior Ashley Gale led the Explorers as she scored a game-high 18 points, with five three-point baskets, and junior Nadia Duncan chipped in 12 points, as each added five rebounds. Freshman Jess Koci pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and added six points.

The Hoyas took an early 4-2 lead before the Explorers held them scoreless for almost six minutes and raced out to a nine-point lead. Gale started the 11-0 run with a three, Duncan scored four points in the stretch and after Michea Bryant sank a pair of free throws at the 12:40 mark, La Salle led 13-4.

Georgetown (3-0) responded with eight of the game’s next 10 points to pull to within three after a Monica McNutt three, but the Explorers built their lead back to nine as Gale scored six in a La Salle 8-2 run.

Rubylee Wright scored four straight points for the Hoyas before La Salle closed the half with five straight points and went into the locker room with a 28-18 lead.

The key to the Explorers lead in the first half, was that they held Georgetown to just 24% shooting, got to the foul line (9-of-15), and turned the ball over just six.

It was a different story in the second half, as the Hoyas scored on seven of their first eight possessions and La Salle turned the ball over five times. They were also 0-for-6 from the floor through the first 6:30 of the second as Georgetown took a 33-28 lead.

The Explorers would find themselves down seven (38-31) with 8:46 left in the game, but battled back to cut their deficit to two. Gale hit back-to-back threes with five minutes left to make the score 44-42.

With under a minute left, La Salle trailed by just three, 49-46, with the ball, but a missed three point attempt and a made Hoya free throw on the other end ended the contest.

La Salle (1-3) will take the weekend off before hosting Oral Roberts on Monday night at 7 PM in Tom Gola Arena, the first of a three straight for the Explorers at home.
