The men’s swimming & diving team won the Frank Elm Super Splash behind first-place finishes from Blase Szyszko in the 200-breast and Charlie Zettel in the 200-fly on the final day of competition.
La Salle racked up 1709.5 points. Delaware, whom the Explorers fell to in a dual meet last weekend, finished in second with 1668 points.
The La Salle women’s team finished in fifth (863.5). Pitt finished on top in the women’s competition.
"It was a great performance top to bottom,” Head Coach Matt Nunnally said. “Our goal was to perform on the boards and in the pool and that was clearly accomplished. We have clear goals set and this weekend proved we are on the right path. While the performances were strong, this weekend was just one point in what we hope is a banner year."
Szyszko, who won the 100-breast the previous day, won the men’s 200-breast finals in 2:05.71. Eric Patenaude placed third in the event (2:11.06).
Zettel took the 200-fly with a time of 1:50.36. La Salle stacked the event finals with Greg Fischer coming in fourth (1:56.66), Sean McCall finishing fifth (1:56.85) and Joe Jung taking sixth (1:57.59).
In the men’s 100-free finals, Austin Thomas, who broke the school record in the 100-fly the previous evening, took second (46.13). Brian Batson (47.54), Dave Derr (47.68) and Kyle Goan (47.85). finished fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively, in the same event.
Zach Anderson turned in a strong distance performance, placing second in the 1650-free (16:23.72).
In the men’s 200-back finals, Tom Lawrie took fourth (1:54.28), Edward Carnes finished sixth (1:55.51) and Nick Caruso placed eighth (1:57.50).
La Salle placed fourth in the 400-free relay (3:12.39).
On the women’s side, Holly Biro took second in the 100-free finals (51.70), while Liz Jordan came in third (51.98) in the event.
Jessica Simunek notched s sixth-place finish in the 200-breast finals (2:24.32). Alex Stoddart took seventh in the 200-back (2:09.55).
The Explorers finished third in the 400-free relay (3:31.29).
On the diving board, Laurie McLaughlin finished ninth in the women’s three-meter finals (215.25), while Jordan Baker notched an 11th-place performance on the men’s one-meter dive (235.75).
