La Salle will continue play in the Cancun Challenge on Tuesday when it faces Big East foe Providence at 4:30 PM Eastern. The Explorers have won two straight, both in the Cancun Challenge, by defeating Prairie View A&M, 88-74, and Morgan State, 79-74.
Sophomore Aaric Murray was named Big 5 Player of the Week after averaging 18.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.0 blocks and 3.3 steals per game in three contests. He blocked a school-record nine shots in the win over Morgan State and is the first Division I player with at least nine blocks and five steals in the same game since Navy's Sitapha Savane on January 31, 2000 against William & Mary. No other player has done this over the last 15 seasons.
Ruben Guillandeaux is averaging 18.3 points per game on the season and is second in the Atlantic 10 in three-pointers made per game. Jerrell Williams is also averaging double figures at 12.5 ppg.
Providence Friars (4-0)
Conference: Big East
Providence comes into today's game with a 4-0 record and has won its games by an average of 16.0 ppg. Marshon Brooks averages 16.0 ppg. and 10.3 rpg. Vincent Coucil adds 15.8 ppg. and 6.0 apg.
The Friars are coached by Keno Davis, who is in his third season. The Friars went 12-19 and 4-12 in the Big East last season.
Series History
Providence and La Salle have played four times with each winning two games. The Explorers took the first match-up in 1937 in Philadelphia, 47-36. The teams next met at the Boston Garden in 1967, this time PC taking a win, 77-56. They then met in a home-and-home series, with La Salle taking a 75-73 win in Providence in 1976, then the Friars taking a rematch in Philadelphia, 75-62, in 1977.
