PHILADELPHIA - Senior Women's Basketball guard Ashley Gale has been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week along with La Salle Student-Athlete of the Week for her efforts over the past week, which included helping La Salle to a 20-point victory over Oral Roberts.
Gale averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks for the Explorers in a 1-1 week.
She led La Salle with a 22-point, seven-rebound, two-assist, two-steal, and two-block performance in the Explorers 87-67 victory over Oral Roberts last Monday. That line included knocking down a pair of three-point baskets, which moved her into the top 10 for a career at the school.
On Sunday, she scored 17 points, which included draining five threes, and added three steals and three assists in the 59-48 loss to Delaware. It was the second time this season she hit five threes, which ties for the most in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
For the season, Gale leads the Explorers with a 14.2 points per game average, 16 made three pointers (2.7 per game), 17 steals (2.8 pg), and four blocks. She is also averaging 33.7 minutes per game which is fourth-most in the league, while, among her other numbers, she is second in steals, third in threes, and 10th in scoring.
For her career, the Cheltenham product has attempted 361 three pointers, good sixth all-time, connected on 110, currently 10th, and is closing in on the top 10 in two more categories and has a chance at a third.
She needs two more blocks to tie Mary Greybush (1987-91) with 47 in a career at the 10th spot, and currently Gale's 81.5% free throw shooting (128-157) would put her fourth all-time, however the minumum for the category is 150 makes. Gale needs to make 22 more foul shots to qualify, but in her sites is Tracey Sneed (1985-89) in the third spot, who made 81.6% of her attempts. Lastly, Gale has 122 career steals, but needs 42 more to reach the top 10 in that category, she had 53 last year.
La Salle (2-4) is off for most of the week before returning to the court to host Tulsa on Sunday at 1 PM at Tom Gola Arena.
