Men's Swimming & Diving Wins Over St. Bonnie's In Final Event

BUFFALO, NY - With the meet coming down to the last relay, the men’s swimming & diving team notched a win against St. Bonaventure, 168.50-165.50, to remain undefeated on the season.

In order to defeat St. Bonaventure, the Explorers needed to finish at least second and third in the 400-free relay and they did just that.  The team of Dan Fitzgerald, Brian Batson, Cameron Cabrera and Austin Thomas took second in 3:10.51 and Kyle Goan, Dave Derr, Greg Fischer and Edward Carnes finished third in 3:12.66.

The La Salle women’s squad turned in a commanding performance, defeating St. Bonaventure, 198-136, and Duquesne, 195-133.

Emily Heath picked up first place finishes in the 1650 free (17:37.96) and 500-free (5:03.74).  Holly Biro also had two first-place performances, winning the 100-free (53.11) and 50 free (24.52).

Biro also helped the 400-medley and 400-free relay squads finish first.  La Salle posted victories in the 200-free and 200-medley relays as well to sweep all relays.

Jessica Carbin won the 100-back (59.19).  Laurie McLaughlin rounded out the rest of the Explorers' first-place finishes by winning both the 1-meter (180.90) and 3-meter (250.35) dives.

For the men, Blase Szyszko edged out Kevin Murphy of St. Bonaventure by a tenth of a second to win the 200-breast in 2:08.17 and also took first in the 100-breast (58.24).

Charlie Zettel  won the 200-IM (1:54.20), as well as the 200-fly (1:52.82).  Tom Lawrie took first in the 200-back (1:55.73) and Thomas did the same in the 50-free (21.20).

In the relays, the Explorers finished first and third in the 200-medley relay, second in the 400-medley and second and third in the 200-free relay.

On the diving board, Jordan Baker turned in a second place performance in the 1-meter dive (280.20).

Both the men’s and women’s swimming & diving squads will next face Rider and Delaware in a tri-meet in Newark on November 13.
