PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle swimming & diving program opened competition at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championships in Buffalo, NY, on Wednesday afternoon.

The short afternoon consisted of just three events - the 200 medley relay, 800 freestyle relay and 1-meter diving.

Jordan Baker led the diving squad as he qualified for the event finals following a 228.30 performance in the preliminaries. Baker finished seventh in the conference in the finals, improving to a 251.20 in the second go-around of the day.

The men's 200 medley race was a thriller as all eight competing teams finished within five seconds. Dan Fitzgerald, Blase Szyszko, Matt Harner and Austin Thomas posted a 1:32.24 for sixth place, less than two seconds off of Massachusetts' winning time of 1:30.58.

The women's 200 medley placed fifth in an extremely tight race. The third through fifth spots were separated by a mere eight-hundredths of a second. The squad of Jess Carbin, Shannon Duval, Holly Biro and Alex Stoddart combined to post a 1:45.50. Third place St. Bonaventure clocked 1:45.42 and Xavier edged out the Blue and Gold by just two-hundredths of a second.

Also in action were the 800 free relay squads. The women's team of Duval, Biro, Liz Jordan and Emily Heath finished fifth with a time of 7:36.48.

The men's squad of Owen Black, Dan Fitzgerald, Zach Anderson and Brian Batson also finished fifth. They combined for a time of 6:49.43.

The Explorers return to action on Thursday for day 2. The preliminaries of the 500 free, 50 free, 200 individual medley and the women's 1-meter diving are set for the first session of the day, with the finals of those events in the second session.
