PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle women's swimmers set a new school record in the 200 free relay on Thursday to highlight day two of competition at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The women sit in fourth place halfway through the four-day meet, while the men's squad is currently in fifth.
The women have 153.5 points, behind Fordham (265), Richmond (185) and Massachusetts (165). The men have accumulated 141 points so far, behind UMass (314), St. Bonaventure (191), Duquesne (191) and Fordham (152.5).
Holly Biro, Liz Jordan, Alex Stoddart and Aubrey Cefalo combined for a new school mark of 1:34.91 to earn the 200 free relay silver medal on Thursday night. The quartet was two seconds behind the Richmond squad that set a new pool record as well.
Also medaling on Thursday were Emily Heath, Shannon Duval and Laurie McLaughlin. Heath put up the first points of the night in the 500 free as she earned bronze with a time of 4:58.39. She made her way into the A-final with a preliminary time of 5:01.53.
Duval tied GW's Paola Leor for 200 individual medley bronze, as they posted identical 2:04.67 times. Duval added 15.5 points to the Explorer total, and had qualified for the finals thanks to a third place prelim time of 2:04.50.
McLaughlin heated things up on the diving board, finishing third with a final score of 244.75. She edged her way in after a sixth place preliminary score of 217.60.
Jordan added points as she finished fifth in the B-final (13th overall) of the 50 free with a time of 24.21. She clocked a 14th place time of 24.16 earlier in the day to qualify for the final.
The freshmen led the way for the Explorer men with Zach Anderson and Tom Lawrie making the A-finals of their events, along with sophomore Austin Thomas. Anderson picked up 11 points for the Explorers with an eighth place finish. He clocked a 4:39.97, after a 4:37.52 time in the prelims.
Lawrie finished just off the medal stand with a fourth place showing in the 200 individual medley. He swam a 1:53.48, missing third by just .12 second. Lawrie moved up in the standings after a seventh place preliminary time of 1:54.48.
Thomas qualified for the A-final of the 50 free, clocking an eighth-place time of 20.96 seconds to add points to the Explorer total. He swam a 20.83 in the preliminaries to qualify for the evening event.
Owen Black also scored for the Explorers as he finished fifth in the B-final (13th overall) of the 500 free. He posted a 4:41.68 in the final after qualifying with a 4:40.19 earlier in the day.
Kyle Goan and Mark Glinski also swam strong, but were left out of the 50 free final by a hair. Goan clocked a 21.31, just one-hundredth of a second off the qualifying time and Glinski swam a 21.32 to miss by two-hundredths of a second.
The Explorers return to the pool tomorrow for day three. On the schedule for the day are the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and men's 3-mtr diving.
