Duval Wins Gold, Two School Records Set on Third Day of A-10's

BUFFALO, NY - Shannon Duval won 100 yard breaststroke gold and new school records were set in two events to highlight the third day of competition at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Buffalo, NY, on Friday. Records were set in the men's 100 back and women's 400 medley relay.

Both the men's and women's teams are in fifth place after the third day.

Duval bested Fordham's Nicole Marshall by five-hundredths of a second to take home the conference title in the 100 yard breaststroke. She swam a 1:03.85 in the final, after advancing with a top preliminary time of 1:03.10 earlier in the day. Liz Jordan joined Duval on the medal stand after earning bronze with a 1:04.75. Jordan had also posted a third place time in the prelim with a 1:04.43 to advance. Also scoring for the Explorers in the event was Marci Wixted who placed eighth in the B-final with a 1:08.46. She qualified for the final with a 1:08.09.

The women's 400 medley relay squad set a new school record on Friday. Jess Carbin, Duval, Aubrey Cefalo and Holly Biro combined to swim a 3:48.84 to set the new mark. They finished third in the fast race that saw the top two teams - Richmond and Fordham - hit the NCAA 'B' cut.

Also setting a new school record was Dan Fitzgerald, who broke the record in the 100 back preliminaries on Friday morning. Fitzgerald's record-setting time of 50.85 seconds qualified him for the A-final, where he finished fifth to pick up 14 points for the Explorers. Ed Carnes also scored in the event, placing fourth in the B-final with a time of 51.83.

Freshman Tom Lawrie earned a silver medal in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 3:59.29 in the final. He qualified via a fourth place time of 4:04.59 in the morning prelim. Classmate Brian Batson picked up points for the Blue and Gold as well, finishing second in the B-final with a 4:10.13. He made the B-final with a 4:13.18 in the morning.

Four Explorer men qualified for the 200 freestyle finals, combining to add 35 points to the score. Owen Black and Fitzgerald went 6-7 in the A-final with respective times of 1:42.67 and 1:43.46. Zach Anderson placed second in the B-final with a 1:42.61 and Mark Glinski finished sixth in the B-final with a 1:44.21.

The Explorers were also well-represented in the finals of the 100 fly. Ed Carnes picked up a sixth place finish in the A-final with a mark of 50.60 seconds. Austin Thomas finished eighth in the A-final by clocking a 50.77. Matt Harner also picked up a score, finishing eighth in the B-final with a 51.77.

Blase Szyszko and Harner were in the B-final of the 100 breaststroke. Szyszko captured second to earn seven points with a time of 57.70 seconds, while Harner contributed a couple of points with a 59.52 for seventh.

Rounding out the men's side, Jordan Baker led the diving squad with a sixth place finish in the 3-meter diving. He earned 244.10 points in the final after qualifying with 270.05 points in the morning run.

On the women's side, Brittany Sedberry added a seventh place finish in the A-final of the 400 individual medley. She clocked a 4:32.49 after qualifying with a 4:31.94 in the prelim.

Carbin and Alex Stoddart went 1-2 in the B-final of the 100 back to add 16 points to the total. Carbin swam the race in 57.37 seconds and Stoddart was just behind in 57.96 seconds.

The Explorers return to Flickinger Natatorium on Saturday for the final day of competition.
