Lawrie Earns Most Outstanding Rookie Honors at A-10's

BUFFALO, NY - Tom Lawrie earned Most Outstanding Rookie honors to lead the Explorers at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship, while Shannon Duval led the women's squad with another gold medal on Saturday. Both squads finished fifth in the league standings with idential 382.5 scores.

Duval captured first place in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.35 in the final. She advanced to the final via a 2:15.07 in the morning preliminaries, which was an NCAA 'B' cut time. Emily Heath was also in the A-final and finished fourth with a mark of 2:21.86.

Heath added a gold of her own in the 1650 free as she swam a 16:48.62 to top the field of 27 swimmers.

Holly Biro also advanced to the A-final of the 100 freestyle, where she placed fourth by clocking a 51.64 in the final.

Three Explorers advanced to the B-final of the 200 yard backstroke. Jess Carbin won the B-final with a 2:04.07, while Brittany Sedberry and Alex Stoddart finished 7-8 with times of 2:08.40 and 2:08.98, respectively.

Laurie McLaughlin led the women's diving squad with a fifth place finish in the final with 230.10 points. She advanced to the final via a fifth place finish in the morning preliminary, also with the same score.

The women's 400 free relay went on Saturday night, with Duval, Biro, Liz Jordan and Aubrey Cefalo combining for a time of 3:28.46 for the bronze medal.

Cefalo also added a B-final finish in the 200 fly where she finished fifth with a 2:10.54.

On the men's side, Lawrie won the B-final of the 200 back with a time of 1:51.18. Ed Carnes joined him in the B-final, placing seventh with a 1:54.56.

Blase Szyszko and Colson Ferrari advanced to the 200 breaststroke A-final. Szyszko finished fourth overall by clocking a 2:05.80 and Ferrari placed eighth with a time of 2:07.21.

Joe Jung earned a spot in the 200 fly A-final, where he finished sixth overall with a mark of 1:54.91. Matt Harner was in the B-final of that event and placed eighth with a 1:57.66.

Austin Thomas and Owen Black added points for the Explorers by finishing 7-8 in the B-final of the 100 free with times of 47.16 and 47.70, respectively.

Rounding out the men's individuals was Zach Anderson, who placed 12th overall in the 1650 free.

The men's 400 free relay finished fifth as Dan Fitzgerald, Owen Black, Mark Glinski and Austin Thomas combined for a time of 3:05.98.

The Explorers will return home to gear up for the ECAC Championships, starting next weekend.
